Poetry and Fiction Guidelines

These guidelines cover poetry and fiction.  Please read all relevant guidelines before submitting.

Rights Information:
We acquire first serial printing rights for a predetermined issue of The Conium Review.  All rights revert to the author upon publication.  We will never reproduce your writing in additional print or online formats without your permission.

Payment:
We are a non-paying market, but we do offer contributor discounts on issues.  And accepted work will always be read by thoughtful, literary-minded people.

Submissions:
  • We accept poetry, flash fiction, short stories, and novella submissions for our print journal on a rolling basis.  Submission information is found in these general guidelines.
  • You may submit up to five poems, three flash fiction piece, two short stories, or one novella.  We define flash fiction as below 1,000 words and novellas as over 15,000 words.  There is no line limit for poetry.  Do not send additional work until you get our response to the first submission.
  • Do not send previously published works.  Our journal only publishes new literature.
  • We do not charge any reading fees.
  • Send your submission to coniumreview@gmail.com.  In the subject line, write “Poetry Submission: Your Name” or “Fiction Submission: Your Name.”  Send each piece as an individual Word (.doc or .docx) document attached to the e-mail.
  • Send a short, informal cover letter in the body of your e-mail.  In the cover letter, list the titles of each piece attached, and then take a couple sentences to tell us about yourself, your writing, prior credits, degrees earned, or anything else that you think is relevant.
  • With your submission, please attach a Word document with a two to three sentence third-person biography.
  • Do not send simultaneous submissions.  We try to respond to all writing submissions within 30 days, but it can sometimes take longer.  Wait 30 days before to querying.

Optional:
  • We appreciate it when you report your submission response times to Duotrope’s Digest.  Many writers and readers find us through Duotrope, and as a professional courtesy we hope that authors log-in and use the site's free tools.
  • If you don’t mind sharing, we like to know where you heard about The Conium Review.  This information helps us figure out the best strategies for attracting new writers and readers to the publication.
