Book and Magazine Review Guidelines

These guidelines are for book and magazine reviews.  Please read all relevant guidelines before submitting.  If you are interested in submitting poetry or fiction to our print journal, read our general guidelines instead.

Rights Information:
We acquire first online printing rights for our website and blogs.  We do not accept previously published book or magazine reviews.  You retain all rights after the initial electronic publication.  If you want to reprint the review elsewhere, you must credit the original publication to The Conium Review.

Payment Information:
We are a non-paying market.  However, guest writers and reviewers get a byline for the article, and your bio is listed on our contributor page.  You may include links to your other projects in your bio, earning you some publicity for your endeavors.

There are occasionally free review copies available for our guest writers who we've worked with the past.  If you write reviews for us, we'll keep you in mind when free materials show up at Conium Press.  In some instances, guest writers may also be given passes to special events where The Conium Review is exhibiting, such as book fairs or conferences.

Reviewer Guidelines:

• If you are interested in writing reviews for us as a volunteer guest writer, contact coniumreview@gmail.com.  Place “Guest Writer: Reviews” in the e-mail’s subject line.  We do not consider unsolicited reviews; always contact us before sending book or magazine reviews and we'll let you know if we're interested.
  
• If you have any prior writing credits or education, let us know.  If you have no writing or publishing history, spend a few sentences to tell us why you’re interested in writing for The Conium Review.
  
• Send sample clips if available.  If you have no writing samples, we may assign you a trial review, and then we’ll evaluate your critical writing ability based on your draft.
  
• We are primarily looking for recent literary publications from small and independent presses.  However, we occasionally review older works or major press releases.  Take a look at your bookshelf (or visit online journals), and send us a list of two or three book or magazine reviews that you’d like to write.
  
• Interested in writing other types of articles, such as craft articles or interviews?  Send an e-mail to coniumreview@gmail.com and pitch your other ideas.
  

Optional:

• If you don’t mind sharing, we like to know where you heard about The Conium Review.  This information helps us figure out the best strategies for attracting new writers and readers to the publication.
